Not quite Christmas, but We're Getting There

The holiday season can be a rush. After a family gathering for Thanksgiving, many are ready to celebrate Christmas! At least in Hawaii, how many of you remember hearing about people waiting at Best Buy the Monday BEFORE Thanksgiving? Retail stores started Black Friday late Thursday night. What does the Christmas season really mean?

Before we can even answer that question, let's look at the reality... IT'S ADVENT, not Christmas. Let's learn to do what we should be doing during advent. Here are some links to help you remember [or maybe learn for the first time] what this liturgical season is all about:

As we approach to commemoration of Jesus' first coming, let us also prepare for his second coming.

You Have One Hour...

The pressure was on and the adrenaline felt like the set of  "Hell's Kitchen" as Nicole T. and Tiffany M. had ONE HOUR to cook for 200 people at the Next Step Kaka'ako Shelter.

ON THE MENU: GOULASH
35 pounds of ground beef
24 cans of sweet corn
18 cans of cream of mushroom
Spoons full of minced garlic
salt and pepper to taste

Needless to say, help trickled in after 45 minutes of cooking. A big THANK YOU goes out to Joshua A., Sharie Q., Roxanne V. and nephew. Cans quickly openning and dumped into pots, it took another hour to finish!

Five minutes to serving time and they just left the church. Apparently there was traffic on the freeway which helped them be even later than anticipated. The people waited patiently for their arrival. With more hands to serve than usual, the lines zipped by and they came back for seconds, thirds, and fourths! It was a good thing they brought unopened cans of sweet corn and cream of mushroom to spread it out as much as possible.

Many compliments to the chefs:
"I've had this many times before, but this is the best I've ever had... Thank you!"

It was a fun experience, a first for some. It has been a long time since our ministry cooked the meal themselves. We will be more prepared next time...

Stay tuned for next month's mission [no pun intended]

Trash into Treasure

If you haven't already heard, a group of our young adults will be going to Rio de Jinero, Brazil, in Summer 2013 for World Youth Day! They will be participating in Days in the Diocese, where they will be doing mission work for four days in a selected diocese, followed by World Youth Day activities from July 23-28.

But to get there, we need some of your help. Find the WYD RIO 2013 participants at Kam Swap Meet tomorrow, Saturday, July 28. You can turn our trash into treasure OR bring in your own things for them to sell.

Stay tuned for upcoming fundraiser events :)

Man of the Beatitudes

Today is the feast day of our patron saint Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati

"With all the strength of my soul I urge you young people to approach the Eucharistic table as often as you can. Feed on this bread of angels whence you will draw all the energy you need to fight inner battles. Because true happiness, dear friends, does not consist in the pleasures of the world or in earthly things, but in peace of conscience, which we have only if we are pure in heart and mind."
~Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati

CANONIZATION PRAYER
"O merciful God,
Who through the perils of the world
deigned to preserve by Your grace
Your servant Pier Giorgio Frassati
pure of heart and ardent of charity,
listen, we ask You, to our prayers and,
if it is in Your designs that he be glorified by the Church,
show us Your will,
granting us the graces we ask of You,
through his intercession,
by the merits of Jesus Christ,
Our Lord. Amen."
IMPRIMATUR, 1932
